HISTORIC VINEYARDS
HISTORIC old federal vineyard (part of h.w. crabb’s to kalon
Oakville, Napa Valley | Originally planted 1881
To use the words of UC Davis, “The Old Federal Vineyard of To Kalon is the most significant vineyard in the state if not the world. It has contributed more to our understanding of viticulture than any other. Research at the Station began with Hiram Crabb and the California Viticulture Commissioners in the 1880s, continued with the USDA until the end of prohibition and now is one of the UC Davis Department of Viticulture and Enology.” We are honored to work with this historic site.
HISTORIC BECKSTOFFER GEORGES III
Rutherford, Napa Valley | Originally planted 1895
Although the vineyard has become famous for high scoring Cabernet from cult producers, we find this wine from the historic Beckstoffer Georges III to reflect more the historic wines than anything else. Originally planted in 1895 by the Rutherford Family, the vineyard has long been an important historical piece of the valley. In the 1920s a change in ownership to the Latour family who owned Beaulieu Vineyards occured, setting it up for fame. In the 1960s & 70s, BV released a wine called “Georges de Latour” which many consider to be the first “cult wine” of the valley. The wine was based primarily on their “vineyard number 3,” hence the name.
HISTORIC BECKSTOFFER MISSOURI HOPPER
Oakville, Napa Valley | Originally planted 1877
Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper is located on the Oakville/Yountville line, and was originally part of a large piece of land owned by George C. Yount, the man from whom the town of Yountville takes its name. Charles Hopper later purchased this land and gifted it to his daughter Missouri in 1877. The land was planted to wine grapes along with prunes and walnuts (as much of Napa's land was at that time). In 1960, the land was purchased by Bruce Kelham as part of the historic Vine Hill Ranch until 1996, when Andy Beckstoffer acquired ownership of the vineyard.
HISTORIC MONTE ROSSO VINEYARD
Moon Mountain, Sonoma | Originally planted 1886
Emmanuel Goldstein and his business partner Benjamin Dreyfus were business partners in the grocery business in San Francisco in the early 1880s when they decided to move out to Sonoma Valley and begin cultivating and planting Monte Rosso Vineyard. The first vines, Zinfandel and Sémillon were planted in 1886 still produce fruit today. In 1938 the Goldstein family no longer wished to farm it and it was sold to Louis M. Martini. The vineyard sits 1300 feet above Napa and Sonoma in the southern Mayacamas mountain range and hosts some of the oldest Cabernet vines in all of California. Wines from Monte Rosso are truly “unicorn” status– the vineyard’s high elevation, volcanic soil, and close proximity to the bay provide the perfect combination of power and freshness that excites all who work with this storied plot.
HISTORIC SAMUEL BRANNAN VINEYARD
Calistoga, Napa Valley | Originally planted 1862
The Samuel Brannan Vineyard could be one of the oldest vineyard sites in all of Napa Valley, dating back to its original planting by the founder of Calistoga in 1862, Samuel Brannan. The site sits in the north-easternmost base of the Vaca Mountain range tucked in a bowl of mountain slope on the valley floor. This site continues to impress with its lightness, given that it comes from Calistoga, a region not typically known for elegance.
